Board of Zoning Appeals Grants Two Variances

On Tuesday March 19th the Suffield Township Board of Zoning Appeals met to hear two requests for variances.  Pete Alexander of 1745 Waterloo Road requested a variance to build an oversized accessory building on his property.  The Board heard his request and voted 5-0 to grant the variance.  After that issue came another variance request from Mel and Patti Colegrove.  About 40 persons had come to hear this request and voice their their comments, of which most were to deny the request.  The Colegroves bought a nine acre parcel of land at the corner of Bolender Road and Portage Line Road with the intentions of dividing the property into six one-point-five acre lots.  The plan was moving forward until Portage County announced that the thirty-three foot right of way for Bolender Road was county property and thus couldn't be counted as land toward the one-point-five acre parcels.  This made the original lot division plan faulty as the township zoning resolutions require one-point-five acres for a building lot and the land the county took away left  these lots with approximately 1.34 acres.  There was plenty of discussion and after all were heard, sometimes several times, a motion was placed before the Board to deny the variance request.  No one seconded the motion.  A second motion was made by Andy Grow to allow the variance and it was seconded by Pete Einloth.  The motion to grant the Colegrove's their variance was ratified 4-1.

Local High School Basketball Scores & Schedules

Mogadore Lose Regional Final Title Game 63-51, Field Boys Season Ends At Alliance 66-54,

The Mogadore Wildcats (20-7) storybook season came to an end on Saturday March 16th at the Canton Fieldhouse.  A much taller team that plays a much more difficult schedule, Cleveland Heights  mowed down the Wildcats by a 63-51 score.  Mogadore fell behind early and trailed 28-6 in the second quarter.  To Mogadore's credit, the Wildcats clawed back, but the task was just too difficult to manage.  The closest that game was after the first quarter was ten points.  Lukas Swartz had 15 points and junior Dylan Jones had one of his best scoring nights, netting 14 points.

On Tuesday February 26th, the Field Falcon (4-19) saw their season come to an end with a 66-54 loss to the Aviators in Alliance.  The Falcons hung with the Aviators through most of the game and trailed by only six with about four minutes to play when Carter Baumbarger picked up several offensive fouls along with technical fouls on Baumbarger and coach Dominique Sanders.  The deficit ballooned to eleven points and that pretty much ended the season for the Falcons.  Jaheim James scored 22 points while Jacob Lupardus added 12.

Field Girls End Season At Norton 53-15, Mogadore Girls End Season At Mapleton 63-22

On Thursday February 21st the Field Falcons (15-9) went to Norton to play for the Sectional championship.  The Falcons were ambushed in a big way, losing to the Panthers by a 53-15 score. The Falcons ended the year with a fine 15-9 record overall and 6-8 in the Portage Trail Conference Metro Division.

On Wednesday February 21st the Mogadore girls ended their season with a 63-22 loss to Ashland Mapleton.  No Wildcats scored in double figures.  Mogadore finished 2-21 on the year, including 0-12 in the PTC County Division.  On a more cheerful note, the Wildcats had no seniors this season and only one junior.  This may bode well for the Wildcats next year.

License Plate Renewals

When buying new license plates, or renewing them, be sure the registrar at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles knows that you live in Suffield Township.  If you simply state your address as Mogadore, the road tax funds, which should go to Suffield Township, will go to Mogadore Village, due to your zip code.  Keep your tax money in the township!

Wingfoot Lake State Park

wingfoot lake state park 20150623 1970716186

Wingfoot Lake State Park is Suffield's only park.   It was opened by the Ohio State Parks & Recreation Department in 2009.  Goodyear had operated the park since the 1960's as a private playground for its employees and for corporate retreats.  As the company footprint grew smaller in the Akron area Goodyear decided to close the park in 2006.  To learn more about the park, such as rental of the facilities, visit the park's website:  http://parks.ohiodnr.gov/wingfootlake
